Beynac Gite Rental
Beynac is the nearest town to our charming gite rental, La Longere, just 3 miles to our east along the D703. It’s ridiculously adorable, sitting as it does right up against the north bank of the Dordogne river, and is rightfully regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in France. It’s as quaint as quaint can be, oozing charm from all of its pores. The cobbled streets spread up a reasonably steep hillside and there’s a sprinkling of shops and restaurants. But the piece de resistance is the famous Chateau de Benyac which sits right on top the limestone escarpment, and dominates the skyline for miles around.
A French Chateau on the English Border?
The Chateau de Beynac was built in the 12th century as a defence against English. The English held the majority of Aquitaine in the south west of France, and the Dordogne river marked the boundary between the French (north bank) and English (south bank) territories. A dramatic stand-off ensued, with the English occupying the majestic Chateau de Castelnaud on the south-side, directly opposite the French-held Chateau de Beynac. Many battles ensued, and eventually in 1197 Richard the the Lionheart and his men captured the Chateau de Beynac. But the occupation lasted barely 2 years, with Richard meeting an untimely death further north, and the French re-establishing control.
Johnny Depp and his love of Chocolat
Much more recently, Beynac gained a starring role in the film “Chocolat” which starred Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche.
